Wyong Family History Group is hosting a Family History Fair, at Toukley Memorial Hall, 13 Pearce Ave, Toukley [behind the buildings of Toukley 50 plus Leisure & Learning Centre] on Saturday Aug 1. The Fair is to celebrate the start of Family History Month.
This is a FREE event. There will be 4 talks during the day, which starts at 9.30am and concludes about 4pm.

Talk 2 Lorraine TURTLE, Using Education and Medical records 11am,
Talk 3 Amelia YOUNG Forensic uses for DNA 1pm,
Talk 4 Amanda BEDE What is Ephemera? 2.15pm,
followed by a forum involving all speakers and the raffle draw.
There will be a raffle and over 20 trade and information tables- including other Family History and Local history groups, local authors , men's shed, woodturners, scrapbooking, displays, and research assistance. We will also be launching our latest publication " Wyong Pioneer Register".

LORRAINE TURTLE: Medical & School Records
This talk will discuss the use of medical and school records for family history research. This will cover what files have survived, where they are held and how to access them. It will also talk about how you can incorporate them into your family story to add meat to the bones of your family tree.

AMELIA YOUNG: Forensic uses for DNA
Amelia Young is a PhD student at the University of Newcastle, exploring forensic investigative genetic genealogy—a fresh approach to solving crimes and identifying unidentified human remains. This method taps into commercial genealogical databases like GEDmatch and FamilyTreeDNA to link unknown DNA with the public. It has already helped make arrests in cold cases across Australia, but it does raise some privacy concerns. Before starting her PhD, Amelia spent time working in homelessness, domestic violence and suicide prevention in the Hunter Valley while finishing her Master of Laws in dispute resolution. She is also a recipient of the Australian Government Research Training Scholarship and recently worked with the Australian Federal Police for three months to focus on her research. Now, she is an academic in law and criminology and a new mum.
