e-Branch August 2014
A note from the PresidentHello Members,
As you might have seen from the report from our last Committee Meeting, we were unsuccessful in our bid to move to the old Wyong Grove School. Justin Keleher made special mention of the quality of the Expression of Interest compiled by the group (thanks to John Selwood for his assistance with this) but advised that we would not be the successful applicant. We do not know (as yet) who will be using this building. Further discussion on this topic will be held at our General Meeting on Thursday 14th at 3pm. This meeting will have Show and Tell instead of a Guest Speaker - if you wish to show or tell, please let the Cottage know beforehand. The presentations will last 5-15 minutes. Our librarian Glenise will have a table set up with giveaway items of excess stock from either the library or donations - these will include books, magazines and CDs. They will be available before and after the meeting. Kerrie Metcalfe (80) LM WFHG President August General meeting - Show and Tell

Annual General Meeting (September) - information
Dear Members
The AGM for our group is fast approaching and you need to know what to expect. Please look to the right of this column to see what positions are needing to be filled. As you will see, although many of the people currently in official positions are willing to stand again, a couple of the key positions must be filled. We will not be able to run the group without those main jobs being covered. If you want to be able to use all the wonderful facilities we have built up over many years then now is the time to offer your services. If you would like to discuss any position, please either ring or email Helen Burkett as I have all the information on each job available and am happy to talk to you. PLEASE don’t think someone else will put their hand up. We are actually concerned about the future of the group without more members taking an active role. Of course, if any financial member wishes to stand for any position within the Group you are more than welcome and a Nomination Form is attached to this email. As always, we sincerely thank those people who are happily doing that bit extra already – won’t you come and join them. ![]()

PRESIDENT - Kerrie Metcalfe our President is willing to accept nomination for another year but only if there is a Vice President who is willing to take over when she and Roger are away on holidays for quite a while next year, and who is also willing to train for the job of President. Kerrie and the Committee will give you all the help possible and we are also working towards sharing some of Kerrie’s jobs around so that the job of President is not as time consuming as it is at present. A new Vice President is required as Trish McDonald is taking a well earned break from this job and the Committee meetings. SECRETARY – Kerry Clarke is not standing so we must have a new Secretary. TREASURER – Michele Gane is standing but needs a TREASURER’S ASSISTANT for emergencies. Michele has the job very well covered and there is a comprehensive job description but this job should have a back up. MINUTE SECRETARY – Esther Dean is willing to stand for this position again we are very glad to say. COMMITTEE – All members currently on the Committee are willing to stand for nomination so there will be plenty of experience to help newcomers. |
Upcoming EventsNotice of Annual General Meeting

Library information
Jean's Research tipsDid you know…..that the whole of Wall 2 has now been covered and re-labelled. This wall is taken up with “Local History” and “Australian History”. Local History does not mean the history of our locality but rather history related to Australia’s various states and is further divided into many, many localities within those states. The wide green patch on the bottom of the spines of the books denotes it’s category but there are further small coloured patches denoting the state e.g. a red star for Queensland and an orange dot for South Australia. The books at the bottom of the shelves with yellow patches are Australian History with titles like ‘Early Colonial Marriages’, ‘Australian Squatters’ or ‘Australian Women’. These books are indexed so Great Aunt Maud may be lurking anywhere within the book about the district or locality in which she resided.
A reminder of how quick and easy it is to find what you are looking for on the library computer – simply press Ctrl + F and in the box which appears type the town or district in which you need to search. Then keep pressing ‘find next’ and you will find, in turn, every book with that word in its title. There has been considerable revision of the category of many books and an updating of the references that may come up in ‘find’, so that something you have looked for at an earlier date may now be found when you search. Compliments on how good the library is looking will be accepted by the librarian. DO you have time to help our Library?Hello fellow members,
Would you be willing to join a small group of members who are continually working to ensure that our Library runs efficiently and our other resources are well managed. We currently have a group that meets each Friday at the Cottage between 9 and 12 to cover books. Why not come along and join us? I promise not to put you straight to work on covering books. We even take a break for an enjoyable morning tea. There are many small library tasks that you may enjoy and any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to join us on a Friday but would still like to help out in some way, please feel free to contact me. Perhaps we could meet at the Cottage at a time suitable to both of us? I look forward to hearing from you or seeing you soon, Glenise Clery Volunteer Librarian Wyong Family History Group Inc. |
Irish Research tip
Research Tip of the Week!
Most researchers tracing an Irish WWI ancestor will start with the Army Service Records, the largest of all the British Services. Less than half of all service records actually survive, because of archival destruction during the London Blitz in 1940/41. From the original 6 ½ million+ service records, only 3 million now survive. There are however several other sources that can help you bridge this gap in the British Army Service records. Everyone who served overseas was entitled to the British and Victory (Campaign) medals. A lesser number of people also received awards for gallantry or distinguished service. The National Archives U.K. has over 5 million records for British Army Medal index cards 1914-1920. The medal cards include the recipient’s name, service number, rank and unit and are available online at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/medal-index-cards-ww1.htm In addition to the traditional British Armed Services the medal cards include women’s services, the Indian Army, and some civilians.
